Schools offering second-language program signals

We scanned the published curriculum, activities and program sections of 7,600+ schools across NSW, VIC, QLD and WA. A school appears under a language if its text mentions that language explicitly. This is a coarse signal — a single mention does not tell you whether a programme is a single weekly elective or a full immersion stream — but it is a useful starting point if you are looking for a school that teaches a particular language at all.

Tally per language:

• Auslan — 362 schools
• French — 472 schools
• German — 204 schools
• Indonesian — 255 schools
• Italian — 474 schools
• Japanese — 735 schools
• Korean — 27 schools
• Mandarin — 189 schools
• Spanish — 176 schools

The broadest language signals in this dataset are still the traditional school-programme languages: Japanese, Italian, and French. That is not surprising, but it does confirm that the page is mostly surfacing established curriculum patterns rather than niche enrichment clubs.

The sharper interest is often in the smaller-count languages. When a language like Korean or Auslan appears at all, families usually care less about the raw count and more about finding a credible shortlist quickly.

Mandarin is a good example of why this page should be read carefully. A mid-sized count does not mean the language is rare in practice; it can also mean schools describe it unevenly across websites, year levels, or PDF-only curriculum material.
